RAINWATER HARVESTING IN CITIES 

Every year, millions of litres of rainwater fall on our cities, only to disappear into drains and eventually into the sea. Ironically, a few months later, many of these same cities struggle with water shortages. This is especially true in metropolitan areas like Mumbai, where heavy monsoon rains are followed by increasing demand for clean water. The solution lies in one simple yet powerful practice—rainwater harvesting.

WHY RAINWATER HARVESTING IS ESSENTIAL 

Rapid urbanisation has increased the pressure on existing water resources. As cities continue to expand, the demand for water grows every year. If one monsoon season receives below-average rainfall, reservoirs quickly begin to dry up, leading to water cuts and shortages.

Unfortunately, much of the rainwater that falls on rooftops and open spaces is allowed to flow into stormwater drains instead of being stored for future use. This valuable natural resource is being wasted.

Although rainwater harvesting has been encouraged in many places, its widespread adoption is often hindered by:

  • Lack of effective enforcement of rainwater harvesting regulations.
  • Limited public awareness about practical and affordable harvesting methods.

HOW RAINWATER HARVESTING WORKS 

Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is the process of collecting rainwater from rooftops and directing it into storage structures or underground water sources instead of letting it run off.

Homes with traditional dug wells can benefit greatly from this system. Rainwater collected from rooftop downpipes can be connected directly to the well. Before entering the well, the pipe should have an elbow joint so that the water flows gently along the wall instead of falling directly to the bottom. This prevents the mud at the base from being disturbed and keeps the water clear.

The connecting pipes may be installed above ground where there is no vehicle movement or laid underground for safety and appearance.

MAINTAINING A RAINWATER HARVESTING SYSTEM 

A rainwater harvesting system requires regular but simple maintenance to ensure clean and efficient operation.

Some important maintenance practices include:

  • Desilt the well once every two or three years to remove accumulated mud.
  • Clean the rooftop before the monsoon and again after the rainy season.
  • Trim overhanging tree branches to prevent leaves from entering the system.
  • Install protective grills at outlet points and inspect them regularly during the rainy season to prevent clogging.
  • Avoid washing food waste into rooftop drains, as it can contaminate stored water.

Regular maintenance not only improves water quality but also extends the life of the harvesting system.

HARVESTING RAINWATER WITH BORE WELLS 

Even homes that have only bore wells can recharge groundwater effectively.

One common method is to dig a pit around the bore well and line it with reinforced concrete rings. The exposed casing pipe is fitted with narrow slots or slits and covered with a fine nylon mesh that filters mud and debris before water enters the bore well.

The surrounding pit acts as a temporary storage tank, allowing rainwater to continue filtering into the ground even after the rainfall has stopped.

A layer of crushed blue metal placed at the bottom of the pit helps prevent mud from being disturbed by flowing water.

IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS 

To ensure safe and effective rainwater harvesting:

  • Clean the nylon mesh regularly to prevent blockage.
  • Cover wells and recharge pits with strong reinforced concrete slabs for safety.
  • Provide a small inspection opening to make maintenance easier.
  • Regularly inspect filters if rainwater is being directly diverted into bore wells.

Proper maintenance is essential because poorly maintained systems may contaminate groundwater instead of improving it.

A SUGGESTION FOR BUILDERS 

Builders and housing developers should consider constructing at least one traditional dug well in every residential project. Dug wells are generally shallow, contain a good quantity of water, and require much less electricity for pumping than deep bore wells.

Rainwater can also be collected from open spaces around buildings by directing runoff into recharge pits. Such systems help replenish underground water tables and reduce dependence on municipal water supplies.
