Do you know that India’s first newspaper was published more than 240 years ago?
The history of newspapers in India began in 1780 with a small English-language weekly called Hicky’s Bengal Gazette, also known as the Calcutta General Advertiser. It was started by James Augustus Hicky in Calcutta (present-day Kolkata) on 29 January 1780.
🗞️ HOW DID IT BEGIN?
James Augustus Hicky introduced the newspaper at a time when printing and publishing were still in their early stages in India. His newspaper carried news, advertisements, social comments and opinions about the events of the day.
Hicky was known for his fearless writing. He openly criticised powerful officials of the British East India Company, including Warren Hastings, the Governor-General of Bengal.
His boldness eventually led to serious consequences. His newspaper faced government pressure, and his printing press was seized. Hicky’s Bengal Gazette ceased publication in 1782.
Although it survived for only about two years, it made an important mark in Indian history.
