The quality of our questions determines the direction of our lives

THE POWER OF A GOOD QUESTION
Once upon a time, four thieves were brought before a judge for their crimes. As they stood in the courtroom, waiting for the judge to announce their punishment, they noticed a beautiful pen lying on his desk.
Each thief looked at the pen and began to think.
The first thief thought to himself, “What a beautiful pen! I wonder how much money I could get if I stole it and sold it.”
The second thief had a different thought. “The person who manufactured such a beautiful pen must be very rich. Once I am released from prison, perhaps I should break into his house and steal his wealth. I could make a fortune!”
The third thief looked at the pen nervously. He thought, “The pen certainly looks beautiful, but the judge uses it to write down punishments. I wonder how many days I will have to spend in prison because of what he writes with it!”
Finally, the fourth thief looked at the pen thoughtfully. Instead of thinking about stealing it, he wondered, “This pen is in the judge's hands because of his knowledge and education. Could I ever acquire such knowledge and achieve something worthwhile in life? Could I become a learned and respected person like him?”
For the first time, the fourth thief began to think deeply about his life. He realised that his criminal activities had brought him nothing but trouble, fear and shame. He understood that if he wanted to change his life, he had to change his thinking first.
That day, he made a firm decision to give up stealing and educate himself. After serving his punishment, he worked hard to learn new things, improve his skills and earn an honest living.
That was the last time he ever committed a theft. His life took a new direction because he had asked himself a question that could transform his future.
The other three thieves had looked at the same pen, but their thoughts had led them towards greed, further crime and fear. The fourth thief, however, had seen it as a symbol of knowledge, wisdom and possibility.

Moral of the Story
The quality of our questions determines the direction of our lives.
Instead of asking, “What can I take from others?” we should ask, “What can I learn from others?”
Instead of thinking about quick gains, we should think about lasting growth. A good question can awaken our conscience, change our perspective and inspire us to become better human beings.
Sometimes, the first step towards a better life is not finding the right answer, but asking ourselves the right question.
