DOES A CAMEL REALLY STORE WATER IN ITS HUMP?
When we think of a camel, one of the first things that comes to mind is its famous hump. For generations, people have believed that a camel stores water in its hump and uses it when travelling through the hot, dry desert. But is this really true?
No! A camel’s hump does not store water. It stores fat.
THE HUMP IS A FAT STORE
A camel’s hump is actually a large deposit of adipose tissue, or body fat. When food is plentiful, the camel stores excess energy in the hump. When food becomes scarce, the stored fat can be broken down and used as a source of energy.
Interestingly, a well-fed camel may have a large, firm hump, while a camel that has been without sufficient food for a long time may have a smaller, softer or even drooping hump.
WHY IS THE FAT STORED IN THE HUMP?
Most mammals store fat beneath the skin or around various parts of their bodies. This layer of fat can act as insulation and help prevent the loss of body heat.
For a camel living in a scorching desert, however, having a thick layer of fat covering its entire body would not be ideal. The camel needs to release heat efficiently to cope with the extreme daytime temperatures.
Therefore, instead of spreading a large amount of fat over its body, the camel stores much of its excess fat in one concentrated place—the hump.
This arrangement leaves much of the rest of its body relatively free of thick fat deposits, helping it deal with the desert heat.
DOES THE HUMP PROTECT THE CAMEL FROM THE SUN?
The hump may also provide some protection from the intense desert sunlight. Since the Sun is generally overhead, the hump receives strong solar radiation and may act as a partial barrier between the sunlight and the camel's body.
Fat is also a relatively poor conductor of heat compared with water and many other body tissues. Thus, the concentrated fat in the hump may provide some insulation.
THEN WHERE DOES THE CAMEL GET WATER FROM?
If the hump does not contain water, how can a camel survive in the desert?
The answer lies in the camel’s remarkable water-conservation abilities.
Camels can drink a very large quantity of water when it is available. They can then conserve that water efficiently. Their bodies are adapted to desert conditions in several ways:
- They can tolerate considerable loss of body water without immediately becoming severely dehydrated.
- Their kidneys produce highly concentrated urine, reducing water loss.
- Their droppings are unusually dry, so very little water is lost through them.
- Their nasal passages help recover moisture from exhaled air.
- Their body temperature can fluctuate during the day, reducing the need to sweat and thereby conserving water.
THE AMAZING FAT-TO-WATER CONNECTION
There is one fascinating fact that may have helped create the myth about water in the hump.
When the fat stored in the hump is broken down inside the body, metabolic water is produced as a by-product. However, this does not mean that the hump is a water tank. The amount of water produced is limited, and the main purpose of the stored fat is to provide energy.
So, the camel does not carry a reservoir of drinking water on its back. Instead, it carries an emergency energy reserve.
A PERFECT DESERT ADAPTATION
The camel’s hump is an excellent example of how animals adapt to their surroundings. By concentrating fat in one part of the body, the camel can store energy without covering its entire body with a thick insulating layer of fat. At the same time, its highly efficient system for conserving water enables it to survive in one of the harshest environments on Earth.
The next time you see a camel crossing a desert, remember: its hump is not a water tank—it is a remarkable energy bank!
